Edinburgh golf courses attacked by “idiots”…

Three popular golf courses in Edinburgh are the latest to be targeted by vandals.

The Merchants of Edinburgh Golf Club, Silverknowes and Carrick Knowe were all attacked by motorbike gangs, causing significant damage to playing surfaces at each venue.

Talk to Edinburgh LiveNiall Watson, Club Manager at Merchants, said: “A few of our members who were on the golf course when they were confronted by a group of balaclavas on electric motorbikes.

“They were far from mere vandals. They actively threatened and intimidated members along the way.”

According to Watson, the thugs attempted to steal clubs from golfers’ bags. However, because they wore balaclavas or face masks, no precise description could be provided.

“In addition to the aggressive nature of these individuals, the damage they can do with motorbikes on greens and tees can cost golf clubs tens of thousands of pounds,” Watson added.

“There are hundreds of hours of work and a huge amount of money invested in producing quality playing surfaces for golfers. The financial implications for golf clubs can be enormous.

Motorcycle gangs were also believed to be responsible for damage to Silverknowes and Carrick Knowe.

A local golfer said Edinburgh Live“I saw a few greens destroyed the previous weekend at Carrick Knowe, especially the 11th hole.

“It was marked by several motorcycle tracks that had torn up the turf.”

Police Scotland are investigating the incidents. Anyone with information should call 101.
