FOX61’s Ben Goldman took to Tumble Brook Country Club in Bloomfield to review the basics of the sport and how to get started in one of America’s favorite pastimes.

“The thing I say to people when they come to me for lessons is, ‘Why golf? Why now?'” said Evan Lambert, golf professional and instructor at Tumble Brook Country Club. “It’s social, it’s competitive if you want it, it’s recreational if you don’t. It’s a really good pastime to go out. To enjoy the beautiful golf course, to spend time with friends. It’s just great, all-encompassing and fun.”

Goldman and Lambert went through all the different clubs in a golf player’s arsenal and Lambert said each had a unique and important purpose.

Shorter clubs, wedges are reserved for shorter shots because they have a high loft. The irons, in varying numbers, can be alternated with respect to the distance of a shot, but are mainly used for a second court or a par 3. Finally, the woods, are used for longer shots which are seen being hit from a tee on a long par 4 or par 5, explained Lambert.

Spending time on the green is also important.

“There are two things I always want people to come practice on the green for,” Lambert said. “First, we have to have a goal when you practice. You can divide it into two areas, what we call lag putting or distance control. Try to get the ball as close to the hole with varying distances, then hit the ball in the hole from short distances. If you put those two things together, you can hit the golf course and be successful right away.

Lambert also explained that not all golf courses have the same price, explaining that some courses are private and public, which all change the way people can pay. On a public course you can walk and pay a fee, while on a private course you pay a fee to play.

A private and public course can also affect your access to golf carts and their prices.

Lambert said all courses will contain some sort of pro shop where you may be able to purchase golf apparel, equipment, merchandise, and more. This is also where you’ll pay for your round or check out a cart with a golf pro.

Goldman and Lambert then walked to the course and explained step by step how to play a hole, Ben being able to save par with Evan’s instructions.
