Just last week, as LIV Golf held its inaugural event, the PGA Tour imposed suspensions on golfers participating in the controversial breakaway league. Now, LIV Golf and PGA Tour players will compete side-by-side as they hunt for one of the sport’s most prestigious fixtures.

Here’s what you need to know about LIV golfers at this week’s US Open.

Why are LIV Golf players allowed to participate in the US Open 2022?

Since the PGA Tour does not host any of the four major tournaments, the Tour suspension does not apply to those tournaments. Whether LIV golfers can play at the majors ultimately depends on the governing bodies overseeing them.

In this case, the United States Golf Association (USGA), which administers the US Open, chose not to disqualify LIV golfers.

“We pride ourselves on being the most open championship in the world and players who have earned the right to compete in this year’s championship, both by exemption and qualification, will have the opportunity to do so,” said USGA in a statement. “Our field criteria were set before registration opened earlier this year and it is neither appropriate nor fair for competitors to alter the criteria once established.

“In terms of players who might choose to play in London this week, we simply asked ourselves this question: should a player who qualified for the US Open 2022, via our published field criteria, be removed from the field as a result of his decision to play in another event and we ultimately decided they shouldn’t.

“Our decision regarding our home ground for the 2022 US Open should not be construed as endorsement by the USGA of an alternate organizing entity, nor as endorsement of individual player actions or comments. Rather, it is simply a an answer to whether or not the USGA considers playing in an alternate event, without the consent of their home tour, an infraction that should disqualify them for the US Open.

Whether the boards that oversee the other majors will make the same decision remains to be seen. The fourth and final major tournament of the year, the Open Championship, is scheduled for July 14-17 and is hosted by the R&A.

Which LIV Golf players are participating in the US Open 2022?

The US Open 2022 field includes 13 players who participated in the LIV Golf Invitational: Richard Bland, Sergio Garcia, Talor Gooch, Branden Grace, Sam Horsfield, Dustin Johnson, Jinichiro Kozuma, Phil Mickelson, Jed Morgan, Kevin Na, Shaun Norris, Louis Oosthuizen and James Piot. Five of those players (Garcia, Grace, Johnson, Na and Oosthuizen) have officially resigned from their PGA Tour memberships.

Former big winners Bryson DeChambeau and Patrick Reed, who are both set to make their LIV Golf debuts in a few weeks, are also on the course at the US Open. DeChambeau (2020) and Dustin Johnson (2016) are the only LIV golfers to enter this year’s tournament with a US Open win on their resume.

Three groups of LIV golfers are in the same group for rounds 1 and 2 (Sergio Garcia and Kevin Na, Sam Horsfield and Shaun Norris, Phil Mickelson and Louis Oosthuizen). Meanwhile, 2021 USA Amateur Champion James Piot will be in one of the hottest groups with the tournament’s defending champion. Jon Rahm and two-time overall winner Collin Morikawa.
