LIV Golf players: Who participates in the rebel tour?

LIV Golf is back for the eighth and final event of the Invitational Series with the team championship to be determined.

Dustin Johnson has been crowned individual champion, but he can double his titles in the first campaign of the Saudi-backed rebel tour.

4 Aces are the No. 1 seeds for the event in Doral, Fla., with Patrick Reed, Talor Gooch and Pat Perez joining “DJ” in Saturday’s semifinals.

There’s a lot of competition, a new format and of course some tempting amounts of money.

Here’s everything you need to know about the latest LIV Golf event in Miami:

What is LIV Golf?

Reports of a new breakaway league first emerged in 2019, but accelerated last year when two-time Open champion Greg Norman became the face of the LIV Golf Series, backed by l Saudi Arabia, as Managing Director.

With the Saudi Public Investment Fund funding the series, there is a clear link to the Saudi government, whose human rights record has been criticized by groups such as Amnesty International.

But what for a long time was seen as a bargaining threat to the traditional PGA and DP World Tours and nothing more, has taken shape as the LIV Golf Series, which also features new competition rules and what organizers of the tournament say it is “exciting” news. format.

What is the format of the LIV Golf Team Championship in Miami?

The top 36 players from the previous seven events and individual ranking qualify for the Tag Team Championship, while league commitments and captain’s picks complete the picture.

Friday October 28 – Quarter-finals

The top four ranked teams will receive a bye. Teams ranked 5-12 will compete in a Ryder Cup-style match-play format.

The top-ranked teams chose their opponents. Unlike the Ryder Cup, no player will be absent, so all 32 players from eight teams will compete in a tee shot. One point is awarded for each one-on-one team match and there are three matches: two singles matches and one foursome match. A team with two points will qualify for Saturday’s matches and matches will be played until a winner is confirmed i.e. draws or half points.

Saturday October 29 – Semi-finals

The top four seeded teams will now face the teams from Friday’s quarter-finals, with the same format and a one-on-one tag team match to decide who wins the Tag Team Championship.

The top ranked teams select their opponents again and all 32 players from the eight teams will play in a tee shot. Just like Friday, we will see: two singles matches and one foursome match and one point per match awarded to confirm a winning team with two or more total points. The four winning teams advance to the team championship.

Sunday October 30 – Team Championship

This is where it changes once again, with the four winning teams going head-to-head in a round of shotgun start stroke play.

The 16 players will compete with a court divided into two balls. Team captains will play together. All four scores count towards the team score and the lowest collective score in stroke play will crown the inaugural LIV Golf Team Champions.

When is the Miami event?

The tournament will start on Friday October 28 and will continue until Sunday October 30. Day one, which includes quarterfinal matches, begins at 12 p.m. ET (5 p.m. BST) at Trump National Doral in Florida. The same start time will be on Saturday in the semi-finals, but expect the final day of competition to start earlier on UK time when the clocks roll back, meaning a 4pm start if you are connecting from the UK.
