Report: Players Championship Increases Purse to $20 Million | Golf News and Tour Information
The PGA Tour has informed players that next year’s Players Championship purse will increase by at least $5 million, Golf Channel first reported.
The news means the tour’s flagship event at TPC Sawgrass will receive a purse of at least $20 million. It’s by far the most money allocated in a tournament in one go, and eclipses the purses of the sport’s four majors in 2021 ($12.5m for the US Open, $12m for the Championship PGA and $11.5 million for the Masters and Open Championship). ). The Players winner would earn $3.6 million, up from the $2.7 million Justin Thomas earned for his win in March.
The only higher payouts in golf come in the FedEx Cup playoffs, with a pool of $60 million distributed to those who make the playoffs, $46 million distributed to the 30 players who reach the season finale at East Lake and $15 million to the winner.
Additionally, the winner’s only 2022 Tournament of Champions will see an increase in prize money from $6.7 million to $8 million. According to reports, players will also receive $50,000 for making at least 15 starts from this season.
The news comes as the tour battles threats from rival leagues promising guaranteed paydays for the game’s biggest stars, and follows the tour’s new Player Impact program, a $40 million bonus pool for players who drive publicity and engagement.
