Youth spotlight international team selections for Presidents Cup | Golf News and Tour Information

A rival league has left international captain Trevor Immelman with a pool of contracted talent, but the former Masters champion has completed his squad for the 2022 Presidents Cup.

Immelman announced Tuesday morning that KH Lee, Christiaan Bezuidenhout, Sebastian Munoz, Taylor Pendrith, Cam Davis and Si Woo Kim were the final six players for the 12-man club, which is set to face the Americans at Quail Hollow later this month. Five of those players will be making their Presidents Cup debuts, with Kim having previously featured in the 2017 game.

The international team originally had four captain picks to eight automatic qualifiers. However, two of those qualifiers, Cam Smith and Joaquin Niemann, later signed to play for LIV Golf. After competing in last week’s LIV event, they were both suspended from the PGA Tour and made ineligible for the Presidents Cup. Potential international players like Abe Ancer, Louis Oosthuizen, Marc Leishman and Carlos Ortiz are also banned due to their associations with the Saudi-backed circuit.

“You know, the underdog role is there,” Immelman said. “Everyone sees it. We’ll wear it with pride. We’ll represent underdogs around the world in all aspects of life, whether it’s business, sports or kids in school. We’ll be there to represent all the underdogs. try to make them proud.”

To fill the void, Immelman went with youth, as Lee and Pendrith at 31 are the oldest of the captain’s picks. Only Lee has recorded a tour victory this season, but Munoz has three top-five finishes, and Bezuidenhout and Pendrith boast runners-up to their name.

Notable names left out include Erik Van Rooyen (who was injured in 2022), Adam Hadwin and Ryan Fox.

The six will join Hideki Matsuyama, Sungjae Im, Joohyung “Tom” Kim, Corey Conners, Adam Scott and Mito Pereira in Charlotte. A total of seven countries are represented in the international team. They will seek the first international victory on foreign soil in the history of the event.

“We understand exactly the mountain we have in front of us – possibly the best American team ever if you look at them on paper with their accomplishments and world rankings,” Immelman said. “But hey, when you’re a little kid growing up outside the United States and you dream of playing on the PGA Tour, you dream of playing in major championships at the highest level. That’s all you ever have dream is to have the opportunity to play against the best on their home soil, and that is what we will have here in a few weeks.”

U.S. captain Davis Love III will announce his six captain picks on Wednesday. The six who have already qualified for the team are Scottie Scheffler, Patrick Cantlay, Sam Burns, Xander Schauffele, Justin Thomas and Tony Finau.

The 2022 Presidents Cup kicks off on September 22. The United States have won the last eight matches.
