Zeller wins Michigan Golf Open

(July 13, 2022 10:22 p.m.) Jackson golfer Greg Zeller knew he wanted a change this spring and leaned on a familiar face in Jackson golf gear.
Zeller had his irons refitted – adding a quarter inch – and had the shafts of his irons replaced by Ed Mitchell.
It all paid off on Wednesday as Zeller won the Yamaha Golf Cars Plus Senior Open at Bedford Valley Golf Course.
Zeller finished with a two-day total of 5-under par to win the statewide event by a stroke. He finished with a total of 139 shots in the tournament.
“It’s the biggest win I’ve ever had,” Zeller said Wednesday night. “I’ve played the Senior Open five or six times and cashed in three times.
“My goal is to see how many pros I can beat.”
Zeller beat them all with a strong start on Wednesday. He was two strokes behind the leaders after shooting a 2-under 70 on Tuesday, despite hitting 16 of 18 greens. Fortunately, he was playing with the two leaders in the second round on Wednesday.
The Jackson golfer birdied on five of seven holes to start his round Wednesday, taking the lead on the third hole. Four of his birdie putts were 10 feet or less and he made two par-5 putts after hitting the green in two.
“I hit my driver well both days,” Zeller said. “After I put my irons back on, I hit them higher and straighter.”
Mitchell started the Mitchell Golf Equipment Company and has worked with golfers, from high handicap players to PGA Tour pros, over the years.
Jackson was well represented at the tournament as Steve Maddalena – the defending Michigan Senior Open champion – finished tied for second at 4 under par. Jackson Country Club’s Ron Beurmann tied for 12th with 146 for both days and Sharp Park’s Eric Terrian shot 148 to tie for 19th.
Jackson’s Roger Kuhl finished 23rd shooting 163 in the Super Senior tournament at Bedford Valley.
